The Emergency Department is a key component of the acute health care system, operating at the interface between the community and the hospital.

The main focus of an ED is the provision of acute patient care.

Emergency Medicine

  • Is a time-dependent process
  • Involves assessment, treatment and disposition of patients requiring acute care.
  • Is accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days per year to anyone seeking care
  • Provides episodic, unscheduled care
  • Cares for undifferentiated patients presenting with the full spectrum of illness and injury, both physical and behavioural, and throughout all age-groups.
  • Is a specialist service.

About Sutherland Emergency Department

Sutherland ED is a consultant-led service.

  • The FACEM (ED consultant, Emergency Physician) in charge is ultimately responsible for the care of all patients
    • Please involve us in the care of all your patients.
  • FACEMs are onsite:
    • 8am to 12midnight
    • 7 days a week.
  • ED senior in charge is delegated to a registrar or CMO overnight, with a FACEM on call from home.

Sutherland ED provides services to the 220,000 residents of the Sutherland Shire, covering a geographic area of 370 square kilometres

  • Approx 60,000 presentations per year
  • About 30% of ED patients are admitted
  • Paediatric patients comprise about 25% of presentations, with an admission rate of around 10%.
