In hours
The Inpatient Team (specialty registrar or consultant) when contacted by the medical staff from ED:
- may accept the admission and have the patient transferred to the ward for assessment
- may assess the patient in ED and make a decision to admit or discharge the patient within one hour of being contacted (regardless of pending investigations) with appropriate follow-up and discharge letter.
- If assessment is not possible within one hour, the ED senior may elect to admit the patient under the AMO team and the patient may be transferred to a ward.
Evenings (1630 to 2300)
- ED senior contacts AMO directly for admission
Overnight
- ED senior admits on behalf of AMO and call AMO between 0700 and 0800 (unless urgent advice required, or patient requiring ICU admission)
NB: the doctor who has arranged admission is responsible for
- Charting medications and fluids for the next 24h
- Ensuring the patient is suitable to be transferred to the ward
- Modifying BTF calling criteria as required
- In hours this is therefore the responsiblity of the admitting team
