A Minor Injury and Illness Unit (MIIU) has been established to create capacity within our Emergency Department.
The MIIU is located on level 2 (in the space previously occupied by the Medical Outpatient Clinics) and is an extension of the Emergency Department for streamed care of low acuity, single system complaint patients with no COVID-19 symptoms.
The aim of the MIIU is to provide quality care to patients within a 2 hour timeframe ensuring efficient flow of patients from arrival to discharge or admission.
The clinic is staffed by 2 x Nurse Practitioners, 1 Triage/CIN, 1 x RN and Clerical Admin Officer.
All patients must be screened prior to the main ED triage to see if they are appropriate for the MIIU and then can be sent around for formal registration and triage in the MIIU.
Inclusion criteria:
MIIU patients:
- Have only single system complaints;
- Are alert, oriented and self-caring;
- Able to ambulate with minimal assistant;
- Do not require a bed for treatment;
- Do not require IV opioids;
- Must be able to be seen, treated and discharged within 2 hours.
